Barnett Newman 131

When Barnett Newman started painting his later works, he didn’t get much of a following and his family and friends didn’t understand what he was doing with his art. Some even called him crazy and an outcast. It wasn’t until about a year later that people started to notice and appreciate his work which consisted of large canvases in mainly one colour.

Many people thought he was a genius as he influenced two generations after him. I, on the other hand, don’t understand his painting style or this whole craze in general. Painting a large block of colour on a canvas and painting a white strip also called his famous “zipper” down the middle just demonstrates no interest for me. I will say that the little bit of variation in texture and paint opacity in some of his pieces are a little bit more intriguing but still not very compelling.
